Seek wisdom but not to lean on it October 9, 2007

Inspired by my devotional* today, taken from Proverbs chapter 2 to 3. Inspired by the point stated by John C. Maxwell on the passage, which is entitled The Irony of Spiritual Leadership:

As a spiritual leader, …

We are to get wisdom and understanding (2:1-5**), yet we are not to lean on it apart from the Lord (3:5,6***).

John Maxwell

It’s an irony isn’t it, if you see a bookstore, so many books and audios talk about wisdom, mindset, inspiring success stories, etc. It’s just similar like what Proverbs 1: 20-22 **** mentioned, wisdom calls aloud outside, raises her voice in open squares, and so on.

Sometimes I questioned, is it the right one, so many self-help books, and inspiring success stories being published and advertised, but will it contradict my Christian faith?

From the devotional today, I’m taking a conclusion that we are as a spiritual leaders or called-to-be leaders, we are asked to seek wisdom, from God Himself, from bible and from various experts and successful people that has learned the wisdom and knowledge throughout his life. Each of them may not perfect, but they have some value that God wants us to learn from.

Yet, we are asked to make use of the wisdom, making use of them without contradicting our faith, and the more important thing is that not to rely to our wisdom, the knowledge that we have been gathered around the years. Our trust still comes from God and God only, not human understanding nor wisdom.

*My devotional is taken from NKJV bible, specifically the Maxwell Leadership Bible, further info can be checked here.

** 1 My son, if you receive my words,
And treasure my commands within you,
2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,

4 If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will understand the fear of the LORD,
And find the knowledge of God.

King Solomon (Proverbs 2:1-5 NKJV)

*** 5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;

6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct[a] your paths.

King Solomon (Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJV)

**** 20 Wisdom calls aloud outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.

21 She cries out in the chief concourses,[b]
At the openings of the gates in the city
She speaks her words:
22 “ How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity?
For scorners delight in their scorning,
And fools hate knowledge.

King Solomon (Proverbs 1:20-22 NKJV)
