If your life is to be evaluated, who will be giving the grade? And how is your grade?

It was 3 years ago, I was studying for my final year at NTU Singapore. I took a course on game development, it was very time consuming where we have to submit 5 assignments, including a complete game for the final assignment. It was a struggle for each assignment, and I submitted each with some ‘imperfection’, some mistakes and incompleteness here and there. No more time, so I just submitted my assignment.

The last 4 assignments’ grade are given only at the end of the semester. On the day where the grade is just released, I bumped into my lecturer before the class. I asked him, what is my grade, and he said, “it’s very good”. Eventually, I checked the net and surprised with the line of A+ that I got for all 5 assignments.

“Hey sir, so generous of you, but don’t you know I made so many mistakes, my submission is very simple, with many errors or bugs here and there, don’t you see that, it’s very obvious?” How would he answer if I asked that to my lecturer? Maybe he will answer “Mmmm, who is the one judging here? it’s not you, it’s me, and I’m giving you A+!”

Similarly, in our life, the one valuing our life is our God, not ourselves nor others. We may see mistake and imperfection in our life, but God’s view will be very different. He values our life despite of our weaknesses. God sees the progress, your love for Him and your willingness to repent and change, not all your mistakes.

And you’re an A+ in front of Him.

Time of alone-ness October 24, 2007

Eagle flies alone while other birds fly in flock

Joyce Meyer

We often face loneliness in our life. Loss, death, separation, traveling away from family and friends are some of the reasons. Similarly, in the process of becoming a leader, we might be required to be alone, when we have a vision, and no one understand that vision, when we have to fight for the cause alone in the beginning.

For us facing this, just remember this: it’s not loneliness, but alone-ness. Alone-ness is a fact that happens to us, and we might have no control about that, but loneliness is our response when we feel sad and depressed with our state of loneliness.

Have an attitude that alone-ness is an advantage, time when you can reflect a lot about your life, time you can read books or learn things that you want to learn. Take that time as an advantage not as a suffering.
Enjoy your alone-ness!

Journey of Faith October 14, 2007

Journey of faith, the title of the church sermon today, brought by Ps. Lim Kim Hock.
In the message, we are learning from the life of Abraham, when he asked his servant to find a wife for his son, Isaac. (Gen 24:1-23; 47-67)

The first point I learned, Abraham put his faith on his conviction, based on God’s promises concerning Isaac and the possesion of the land. He stresses the point that the woman for Isaac must not come from Canaan, but from his relatives. Similarly, our conviction must be based on God’s will and God’s promises in our life.

The second point I learned is that God will provide beyond our expectations. He answered the servant’s prayer for a sign even before he finished praying (Gen 24:15).

Living a life of faith is never easy. We meet with all kinds of difficulties or challenges that just seem to come one after another. But at the end of it all, we are blessed by the experience. We learn more about God and grow richer through the experience.

Ps. Lim Kim Hock

“Dolce far niente!” October 13, 2007

Busy, busy, busy! even on weekend I also feel so busy. A message below is an excerpt of weekly message that I subscribed from www.tripleE.com.sg, reminding us about “Dolce far niente!” In English, that means “It is sweet doing nothing!”.

We are all incredibly busy and our thoughts and worries are ever-present. In order to keep your personal energy at a constant equilibrium, you need to re-charge yourself regularly. A great way of doing that is to simply do NOTHING! …Just 15 minutes of being still, meditating or comfortably sitting with positive thoughts will do wonders for you and will help to re-charge your energy levels so that you are firing on all cylinders again. By incorporating “nothingness” into your day, greater creativity, focus and of course energy will result!

What I learn from this message is about taking time to relax, put your thought to the positive things that happens on your life, instead of the to-do lists. Take time from your busyness to praise thanksgiving to God instead of praying for a list of requests.

Will you take time to do that?

Don’t take yourself too seriously October 11, 2007

Back to the book I’m reading right now, Be A People Person by John Maxwell, there is one of the ten tips he mentioned on handling criticism, which is

Don’t take yourself too seriously. If you can develop ability to laugh at yourself, you will be much more relaxed when given or giving criticism… Blessed is he who can enjoy his blunders.

John C. Maxwell

Often we criticize ourselves too much for the mistakes we made. Now what you can do is laugh at your weakness, as what John Maxwell said, enjoy your blunders. Enjoying doesn’t mean that we don’t change or fix our mistakes, that means we accept ourselves on not being perfect while we are in the progress of changing to become better and better. Another important point for us is that…

We are approved by God, we don’t have to win the approval of others and look good in their eyes. We are not perfect people. Too many of us take ourselves too seriously and God not seriously enough.

John C. Maxwell

Productivity: Being productive by being yourself October 10, 2007

Have you ever tried very hard to be productive? A blogger on blogging Michael Martine has a message on blogging productivity that we can apply to anything that we are doing.

The key to being productive is not to try and be productive… it is to understand and be yourself. If a “productivity guru” said that, he would be laughed off the stage, because productivity gurus make their money by selling you formulas—science without the art. Don’t try to be productive! Try to be yourself. Expressing yourself is the art. Productivity naturally follows.

Michael Martine*

So… be yourself! That means follow your passion and calling in life! Share with others and you will be productive!

It’s the tagline of the Joyce Meyer Ministries. One quote that Joyce has ever mentioned in her message:

Life is not about the arrival but it’s about the journey that we take to get there.

Joyce Meyer

So, enjoy your everyday life, you may have plans and goals, but do you enjoy doing it? Don’t cry over the closing door, the un-achieved dreams or unsuccessful plans. Take the lessons and let them go.

Be joyful in whatever process you’re going through as life is more about the journey than the arrival.

Joyce Meyer Ministries provide many ways to bless you, they have free audio and video podcast, as well as free magazine that can inspire and motivate you to enjoy your everyday lives. Do check it at www.joycemeyer.com

Accept who you are and never let anyone change how you feel about yourself. Do not let criticism from others affect you. You cannot please everyone but you are doing the best that you can. So believe in yourself and be confident.

Stop comparing yourself with others. Attempts to keep up with your peers will only cause more stress in your life. You are who you are, you are unique and special in your own ways so you should be happy and proud of it!

Trust God to do His way October 4, 2007

When you have a closed door, trust God that He is preparing a better way for you.

Joel Osteen

That is more or less the highlight of the sermon I heard from Joel Osteen. When we are faced with a closed door, it could be because of our own mistake, or the events that happen to us, we somehow see that God is no longer working, God’s plan in our life has been degraded. That is the time we have to trust God on His way, instead of our own way or our own understanding.

Your thoughts are far beyond my understanding, much more than I could ever imagine.

(Psalm 139:17 CEV)

Typical perfectionist, when things don’t go as what we want, when we disappointed with our own behavior, our own weaknesses, we will be very disappointed, blame ourselves or others for the mistakes. Here is a quote for perfectionist:

Being perfect is not the point–being okay without being perfect is what matters.
Sandra McCollom (Dave & Joyce Meyer’s youngest daughter)

So next time you make mistakes or things go wrong, find reasons to smile and laugh over it =).

God bless u!
